Sir Arthur John Gielgud

Arthur John Gielgud nació el 14 de abril de 1904 en Campden Hill, Kensington, Londres, (Inglaterra).
Comenzó en el teatro, interpretando las mejores obras de Shakespeare.
Su debut en la gran pantalla fue a finales del cine mudo en Who is The Man? (W. Summers, 1924) y The Clue of the New Pin (A. Maude, 1929). Con El agente secreto (Alfred Hitchcock, 1936) llevó a cabo su primer papel destacado y realizó una muy buena interpretación de Disraeli en Primer ministro (T. Dickinson, 1941).
Su conocimiento del repertorio shakesperiano contribuyó a que fuese elegido para interpretar Casius en Julio César (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1953) y Clarence en Ricardo III (Laurence Olivier, 1955); personificó al rey Luis VII de Francia en Becket (P. Glenville, 1964).
Sus papeles han pertenecido a los géneros más variados: La vuelta al mundo en 80 dÃas (M. Anderson, 1956); Saint Joan (Otto Preminger 1957) Los seres queridos (Tony Richardson, 1965); Campanadas a medianoche (Orson Welles, 1966); La última carga (Richardson, 1968); Las sandalias del pescador (Anderson, id.); Oh¡ What a Lovely War (Richard Attenborough, 1969); Asesinato en el Orient Express (Sidney Lumet, 1974); Asesinato por decreto (B. Clark, 1978); El hombre elefante (David Lynch id.); Carros de fuego (H. Hudson 1980); Gandhi (Attenborough, 1983); Plenty (Fred Schepisi 1985), Time After Time (Bill Hays, id.).
Sus dos mejores interpretaciones cinematográficas han sido en Providence (1977) y El director de orquesta (1980). Ninguno de los grandes papeles escritos por Shakespeare se le resistió, desde El Rey Lear hasta su muy celebrado Hamlet, pasando por el Próspero de La Tempestad, su favorito, papel con el que causó no poco revuelo cuando lo interpretó a los 87 años en una adaptación cinematográfica dirigida por Peter Greenaway, Prospero's Books y, plegándose a las exigencias del guión, se desnudó ante las cámaras.
Desde sus inicios a los 17 años, fue un trabajador incansable que sólo en una ocasión se tomó cuatro semanas de vacaciones entre un papel y otro. El actor vivÃa en una elegante casa de campo del siglo XVII, que compartÃa con el que desde 1974 era su leal y discreto compañero, Martin Hensler, de origen austro-húngaro, quien era a la vez su chef, su secretario y su jardinero.
John Gielgud falleció el 21 de mayo de 2000 en Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, Inglaterra.
